How April Got Its Name, Its Length and Its Place
April has been a month for nearly three thousand years, and it changed places in the year, gained a day and even moved a tax deadline along the way.
April is already the second month of the Roman year
The ten-month calendar traditionally attributed to Romulus opened with March, which made April the second month. Even then it ran for 30 days, a length it would later lose and regain.
Two ancient explanations for Aprilis
Roman authors disagreed about the name. One camp linked Aprilis to aperire, “to open”, because buds and blossoms open in spring. Another connected it to Aphrodite, whom the Romans identified with Venus. Some modern scholars look instead to an Etruscan source.
April slides from second place to fourth
When the Roman state moved the start of the consular year from March to January 1, every month shifted in the running order. April, previously the second month, became the fourth, the position it holds in the calendar we still use.
Caesar adds a day and April settles at 30
Before the Julian reform, April had only 29 days in a 355-day year. To bring the calendar into line with the sun, Julius Caesar added ten days across the year; April received one of them, reaching the 30 days it has kept ever since.
A calendar reform shifts the British tax year into April
Britain adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752 and dropped eleven days. The tax year, which used to begin on March 25, moved to April 5 to keep its length, and an extra day was added in 1800. That is why the UK personal tax year still begins on April 6.
Where April 2027 Falls in Other Calendars
This page follows the Gregorian calendar, in which April is the fourth month. Other systems in daily use place the same thirty days at quite different points in their own years, and several of them celebrate a new year right in the middle of April.
Gregorian Calendar
Solar ยท 365/366 days
The calendar behind the page above. April is month four and always lasts 30 days, and in 2027 it covers ISO weeks 13 to 17. Most governments, airlines and schools schedule by this calendar, whatever other systems they also honour.
Islamic (Hijri) Calendar
Lunar ยท 354/355 days
Ramadan 2027 ran from roughly February 8 to March 9, so April falls in the weeks after Eid al-Fitr and holds no major Islamic festival. The next big date, Eid al-Adha, is expected in mid-May. Exact days depend on moon sighting in each country.
Hebrew Calendar
Lunisolar ยท 353โ385 days
April 2027 is mostly the Hebrew month of Nisan, which opens around April 8. Passover begins at sundown on April 21, the eve of 15 Nisan, and lasts until nightfall on April 29 outside Israel. Nisan is counted as the first month for festivals, although the civil new year falls in autumn.
Chinese Calendar
Lunisolar ยท 353โ385 days
The Year of the Goat began on February 6, and the third lunar month opens with the new moon of April 7 (China time). Around April 5 comes Qingming, a solar term when families tidy ancestral graves and enjoy spring outings.
Indian Regional Calendars
Solar and lunisolar ยท varies by region
Mid-April is new-year season across South Asia. Solar calendars mark the sun’s entry into Aries with Vaisakhi in Punjab, Vishu in Kerala, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu and Bahag Bihu in Assam, while lunisolar Ugadi and Gudi Padwa arrive earlier, on April 7 in 2027.
Thai Buddhist Era
Solar ยท year 2570 BE
Thailand numbers years from the Buddha’s passing, so 2027 CE is 2570 BE. Songkran, the traditional new year, runs around April 13 to 15 with water splashing and temple visits, and neighbours such as Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar hold similar celebrations in the same days.
Does April Ever Gain or Lose a Day?
Never: April is fixed at 30 days in every year. A leap year still leaves a mark on it, though, because the extra day in February changes which weekday April begins on, and with it the look of your printed grid.
๐ Common Year (2027)
February has 28 days, so April 1 falls on a Thursday and April ends on a Friday. Its 30 days equal four weeks plus two, which is why Thursday and Friday appear five times each.
๐ธ Leap Year (2028)
February 29 pushes everything after it one weekday later, so April 1, 2028 lands on a Saturday, two weekdays after April 2027’s Thursday. April itself still has just 30 days. A curious pattern holds in every year: April 1 and July 1 share a weekday, because April, May and June add up to exactly 13 weeks.
Checking whether a year is a leap year
Together these rules average 365.2425 days per year, close to the length of the tropical year of about 365.2422 days. A plain every-four-years rule would run ahead of the seasons by around three days every four centuries, and the Gregorian reform of 1582 was designed to stop exactly that drift.
Printing a Sharp April Page
A few settings decide whether your April sheet comes out crisp and centred or cropped and fuzzy.
๐จ๏ธ Five steps to a clean print
- Set the paper size in the builder (A4, Letter or A3) before exporting, so the grid is drawn for that sheet from the start.
- Save the PDF and open it in your browser or a PDF reader.
- Open the print dialog with Ctrl + P on Windows or โ + P on a Mac.
- Choose Fit to page (sometimes called fit to printable area) and keep the same orientation you picked in the builder.
- Look at the print preview once before sending it, and avoid Actual size if you changed paper after exporting.
๐ก Small tweaks that help
- Hanging April on a wall? A3 keeps the day boxes big enough to write in without the text softening.
- To save ink, pick a paler accent colour and turn weekend shading off, or use Blank Calendar for a light, fast print.
- A sheet that will stay up all month copes better on 120โ160 gsm paper than on thin office stock.
- Use PNG for a phone or desktop wallpaper and PDF for anything going to a printer or copy shop.
- Sharing with a class or team? Everyone can export their own single April page rather than a whole year.

Students & Teachers
Map out assessment weeks, project hand-ins and revision blocks as the school year moves into its final stretch.
Teams & Managers
Plan the opening weeks of Q2 or a new fiscal year (April 1 in India and Japan), and check leave requests against your country’s holidays.
Gardeners & Outdoor Planners
Note sowing windows, community clean-ups around Earth Day and the first mowing or planting weekends, one box at a time.
April Trivia Worth Knowing
Nine short facts about the month, each checked against the calendar.
Roman writers could not agree on where Aprilis came from. The favourite theories are aperire, “to open”, for spring buds, and a link to Aphrodite, the Greek counterpart of Venus.
April is one of only four 30-day months, alongside June, September and November. Leap years never touch it.
April 2027 has five Thursdays (1, 8, 15, 22 and 29) and five Fridays (2, 9, 16, 23 and 30), and only four of every other weekday.
April’s birthstone is the diamond, prized for its hardness, and its birth flowers are the daisy and the sweet pea.
Western Easter can fall anywhere from March 22 to April 25. In 2027 it arrives on March 28, one of the earlier dates, so April has no Easter days, while Orthodox Easter follows on May 2.
April 1 and July 1 always fall on the same weekday, in leap years and common years alike, because April, May and June together span exactly 91 days, or 13 weeks.
Several large economies start a financial or school year in April: India’s fiscal year opens on April 1, Japan’s fiscal and academic year begins in April, and the UK personal tax year starts on April 6.
The sun’s zodiac sign changes during the month: Aries covers the first stretch of April until about the 19th, and Taurus takes over around the 20th. The switch date moves by a day between years.
On April 4, 2027, New Zealand and southern Australia set their clocks back an hour, giving them an extra hour in bed while North America and Europe are already on summer time.
April & Calendar Myths, Checked
Some popular April beliefs fall apart when you look at the dates.
April Fools’ Day began when France moved New Year from April 1 to January 1 in 1564.
It is a popular story, but no solid evidence connects the 1564 change to the prank tradition. Historians have not pinned down where the custom started, and several competing explanations remain in circulation.
Easter always falls in April.
Western Easter can land anywhere between March 22 and April 25. In 2027 it is on March 28, so Good Friday and Easter Monday are both in March, and Orthodox Easter arrives even later, on May 2.
US tax returns are due on April 15 without exception.
The usual federal deadline moves to the next business day when April 15 lands on a weekend or a holiday. In 2027 April 15 is a Thursday, so the date stands. Other countries use different dates altogether; the UK tax year, for instance, starts on April 6.
Clocks change on the same weekend everywhere.
Rules differ by region. The US and Canada moved forward on March 14, 2027 and Europe on March 28, while New Zealand and southern Australia put clocks back on April 4. Much of Asia and Africa does not change clocks at all.
A leap year makes April longer.
Only February ever changes length. April stays at 30 days every year; a leap year just shifts the weekday it begins on.
April is a rainy month all over the world.
The “April showers” rhyme describes parts of northern Europe and North America. In South Asia April is often one of the driest, hottest months before the monsoon, and in much of the Southern Hemisphere it brings autumn weather instead.
One Month, Four Different Seasons
April sits at a seasonal crossroads: spring in one hemisphere, autumn in the other, pre-monsoon heat in the tropics and lingering snow at altitude. Here is what the month usually feels like depending on where you live.
Spring
Northern HemisphereAcross Europe, North America and temperate Asia April is the core of spring. Trees come into leaf, days run longer than nights and blossom peaks, though the weather is famously changeable, with sun and showers in the same afternoon.
Autumn
Southern HemisphereSouth of the equator the same weeks bring autumn. Australia, New Zealand, southern Africa and southern South America see cooler nights, turning leaves in temperate areas and the close of the summer holiday season.
Hot Season
South & Southeast AsiaMuch of India, Bangladesh, Thailand and Myanmar heads into its hottest weeks before the monsoon arrives. New-year festivals such as Songkran, Vaisakhi and Puthandu fall right as the heat builds.
Late Winter
Mountains & High LatitudesNot everywhere has moved on. High mountains, northern Scandinavia and Arctic Canada often hold deep snow through April, Alpine and Rocky Mountain ski areas stay open, and on Svalbard the midnight sun begins around April 19.
April 2027 Festivals and Events
Six April occasions worth writing on your calendar, with the 2027 dates where they are fixed.
Songkran Water Festival
Thailand’s traditional new year usually runs from April 13 to 15. Streets fill with water fights, while families visit temples, pour scented water over Buddha images and show respect to elders.
Vaisakhi and Regional New Years
Government calendars list Vaisakhi, Vishu and Puthandu on Wednesday, April 14, with Bahag Bihu and Poila Boishakh on April 15. Sikhs also remember the founding of the Khalsa in 1699 on Vaisakhi, and harvest fairs mark the season.
Passover (Pesach)
Passover starts at sundown on Wednesday, April 21 and ends at nightfall on Thursday, April 29 outside Israel (April 28 in Israel). Families hold a Seder on the first evening, retell the Exodus story and eat matzah in place of leavened bread.
Patriots’ Day & the Boston Marathon
Patriots’ Day, a Massachusetts and Maine holiday, falls on Monday, April 19. It recalls the 1775 battles of Lexington and Concord, and the Boston Marathon, first run in 1897, is held on the same day.
Anzac Day
Anzac Day, April 25, remembers the 1915 Gallipoli landings. It falls on a Sunday in 2027, with dawn services, marches and wreath-layings on the day itself and a follow-on Monday holiday in New Zealand and several Australian jurisdictions.
King’s Day
On Tuesday, April 27 the Dutch celebrate the king’s birthday by dressing in orange, holding street markets where anyone can sell second-hand goods, and gathering for music and canal-side parties.
