โ๏ธ Good uses for an empty May grid
- Exam and revision timetables: spread study blocks across the weeks before June papers begin.
- Garden and allotment logs: jot down sowing, planting-out and watering days as the soil warms.
- Wedding and event schedules: May is a busy month for venues, so note fittings, tastings and rehearsals by hand.
- Local holidays: add a school half-term, a regional day off or a festival that the built-in lists leave out.
Helpful Extras Beside Your May Preview
Alongside the printable grid, the panels around the preview give you a few quick planning aids.

How May Got Its Name and Its Place in the Year
May has been a 31-day month for as long as Rome kept records, but its position in the year, its folklore and even its modern meaning as a day of labour all changed along the way.
Maius: named for a goddess, or for the elders?
The Latin name Maius was tied by Roman writers to Maia, a goddess connected with growth and the swelling of spring. Ovid, however, noted a rival explanation: that the month honoured the maiores, the elders of the community, just as the next month, Junius, was said to honour the young (iuniores). Both theories were in circulation, and neither was ever settled.
May starts life as the third month
In the traditional ten-month Roman calendar, the year began in March, so Maius came third, after Martius and Aprilis, and already had 31 days. Winter was left as an unnamed gap. The spring placement matched May’s farming role, when crops were up and livestock were moving to fresh pasture.
Two reforms shuffle its position, not its length
When January and February were added at the front, May slid to fifth place. In 45 BCE the Julian reform reshaped many months but left May at 31 days. Pope Gregory XIII’s 1582 correction removed ten days from October that year, so May was untouched then, too. It has been 31 days ever since.
Flowers, ghosts and an unlucky month for weddings
The Floralia honoured the flower goddess Flora from late April into early May. On May 9, 11 and 13 Romans held the Lemuria, a household ritual meant to settle restless spirits. Because of the Lemuria, Ovid tells us, marrying in May was considered ill-omened, a superstition that lingered in English folklore for centuries.
May 1 becomes International Workers’ Day
Strikes for an eight-hour working day in Chicago in early May 1886 ended in the Haymarket tragedy. In 1889 an international socialist congress in Paris called for a worldwide demonstration on May 1 the following year. That first observance in 1890 turned an old spring festival date into the labour holiday now marked across much of the world.
What May 2027 Looks Like in Other Calendars
The Gregorian grid above is just one way of counting days. Here is where the same weeks fall in six other systems still used today.
Gregorian Calendar
Solar ยท 365/366 days
The calendar behind this page. May 2027 is its fifth month and runs from day 121 to day 151 of a 365-day year. It is the shared civil calendar for most governments, airlines and schools, even where a second calendar governs religious dates.
Islamic (Hijri) Calendar
Lunar ยท 354/355 days
Most of May 2027 falls in Dhu al-Hijjah 1448, the month of the Hajj pilgrimage. Eid al-Adha is its tenth day, expected on May 16 or 17. Because a lunar year is about eleven days shorter, the festival moves earlier each Gregorian year and reaches early May in 2028.
Hebrew Calendar
Lunisolar ยท 353โ385 days
The Omer, a 49-day count from Passover to Shavuot, runs through May. Its 33rd day, Lag BaOmer, is on Tuesday, May 25, 2027 (starting at sundown the evening before), and Shavuot follows in June. Leap months are added so these dates stay in their season.
Chinese Calendar
Lunisolar ยท 353โ385 days
The fourth lunar month of the Year of the Goat begins with the May 6 new moon, and the eighth day of that month, May 13, is Buddha’s Birthday in Hong Kong and South Korea. Each lunar month starts at a new moon, which is why the same phase dates matter on both calendars.
Hindu Calendar
Lunisolar ยท varies by system
May sits mostly inside Vaishakha, a month prized for auspicious starts. Akshaya Tritiya, a day for new beginnings and gold purchases, falls around May 9, and the Vaishakha full moon on May 20 is Buddha Purnima. Local panchangs can differ by a day.
Ethiopian Calendar
Solar ยท 365/366 days
Twelve 30-day months plus a short thirteenth. In May 2027 the Ethiopian year is 2019, and Ginbot, the ninth month, starts on May 9. Ethiopian Orthodox Easter (Fasika) is on May 2, the same day as Orthodox Easter in Greece, Russia and Serbia.
Does a Leap Year Change May?
May is fixed at 31 days whatever the year, so a leap year never adds or removes a May date. What it does change is the weekday each May date lands on, which is why a calendar has to be reprinted every year.
๐ Common Year (2027)
May 1 is day 121 and May 31 is day 151. Compared with 2026, when May 1 was a Friday, every date shifted forward one weekday, so May 1, 2027 is a Saturday.
๐ธ Leap Year (2028)
February 29 pushes May 1 to day 122 and May 31 to day 152. Since a leap year is 366 days, or 52 weeks plus two days, May 1, 2028 lands on a Monday, two weekdays after 2027’s Saturday.
Three quick checks for any year
Without the century exceptions, the calendar would run about three days ahead of the seasons every 400 years. With them, the average year is 365.2425 days, close enough to the sun’s true cycle that May will keep arriving in Northern Hemisphere spring for thousands of years.
Printing May 2027 So It Comes Out Sharp
A few choices decide whether the page looks crisp on the wall or a little squashed. Here are the ones that matter most for a six-row month.
๐จ๏ธ Five steps to a good printout
- Set paper and orientation first in the builder (A4, US Letter or A3), since the layout is drawn to fit them.
- Save the PDF and open it in a PDF viewer rather than straight from the download bar.
- Open the print dialog with Ctrl + P on Windows or โ + P on a Mac.
- Choose Fit to page and keep the same orientation you selected on this page.
- Look at the preview before you print. If it shows shrunken margins, change scaling away from Actual size.
๐ก Tips specific to May
- May 2027 uses six rows, so each day box is shorter than in a five-row month. Portrait or A3 gives you more room to write.
- Planning a garden bed or a school timetable? Try notes lines on and weekend shading off to keep the page light and readable.
- Use 120 to 160 gsm paper if the page will stay pinned up all month or take marker pens.
- Save a PNG for a phone wallpaper or a family chat, and the PDF for anything that goes to a printer.
- Need only the grid? Tick Blank Calendar and print the plain May layout with almost no ink.

May’s birthstone is the emerald, long linked with renewal and good fortune, and its birth flowers are the lily of the valley and the hawthorn.
The Sun crosses from Taurus into Gemini around May 20 or 21, so people born in May can belong to either sign depending on the day.

Tromsรธ in northern Norway enters its midnight-sun season around May 20, and the Sun does not set there again until late July.
Eid al-Adha moves about eleven days earlier each Gregorian year. It was around May 27 in 2026, is expected around May 16–17 in 2027, and reaches early May in 2028.
May 20 and 21, 2027 mark 100 years since Charles Lindbergh flew solo from New York to Paris, a flight of about 33 and a half hours.
May and Calendar Myths, Sorted Out
A few popular beliefs about May and its holidays do not hold up when you look at them.
May Day has always been about workers and unions.
Its roots are much older: spring festivals such as the Roman Floralia and the Celtic Beltane, with maypoles and flower garlands, marked the start of summer long before the labour movement adopted May 1 in 1890.
Every country celebrates Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May.
Many do, including the US, Canada and Australia, but plenty do not. The UK and Ireland use Mothering Sunday in March, the Arab world uses March 21, Spain marks the first Sunday of May (May 2, 2027) and France the last (May 30, 2027).
Memorial Day is always on May 30.
It was fixed on May 30 as Decoration Day for over a century, but since 1971 the US federal holiday falls on the last Monday of May. That can be any date from the 25th to the 31st, and in 2027 it is the 31st.
The superstition against May weddings is a Victorian invention.
Ovid recorded it in ancient Rome, linking it to the ghost-appeasing Lemuria rites on May 9, 11 and 13. The idea survived in English proverbs, even though many modern couples happily choose May for its mild weather.
Eid al-Adha and other Islamic holidays have fixed dates like Christmas.
They follow the lunar Hijri calendar, which is about eleven days shorter than a solar year. The festival keeps drifting earlier on Gregorian calendars, and each year’s exact day is confirmed by a moon sighting or an official announcement.
The longest days of the year fall in May.
Days are long and growing in the Northern Hemisphere, but the longest arrive at the June solstice, around June 21. Meanwhile in the Southern Hemisphere, May days are shortening toward their winter minimum.
Four Ways to Experience May
May is a hinge month: spring peaks in one hemisphere, autumn deepens in the other, and much of South Asia waits for the rains. Here is how the month feels depending on where you are.
Late Spring
Northern Hemisphere, temperateAcross the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland and most of Europe, May is the last month of meteorological spring. Trees are in full leaf, daylight stretches past 14 hours in many places, and the risk of frost fades, so gardens, patios and weddings get busy.
Late Autumn
Southern HemisphereIn Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and southern South America, May brings cooler mornings, shorter afternoons and turning leaves. It sits just before meteorological winter begins on June 1, and it is often a comfortable, settled month for travel.
Pre-Monsoon Heat
South Asia & the GulfNorthern and central India, Pakistan and the Gulf are among the hottest places on Earth in May, with temperatures regularly above 40ยฐC. The southwest monsoon typically reaches Kerala around the start of June, so the month is one of anticipation for rain.
Almost No Night
Far Northern LatitudesScandinavia, Iceland and northern Russia see nights shrink rapidly through May. Around May 20 Tromsรธ in Norway enters its midnight-sun season, and even farther south the sky barely darkens by the end of the month.
