How December Got Its Name and Its 31 Days

December has been the last month for so long that its name no longer matches its position. Here are the turning points behind the month you are printing.

🔟
c. 8th century BCE

The “tenth month” of an early Roman year

Rome’s oldest calendar is said to have run ten months from March, and the last of them was named after decem, the Latin word for ten. Two months were later placed in front, moving it to twelfth place, but the name never changed.

🕯️
Roman Republic and Empire

Saturnalia fills the darkest weeks

Romans honoured Saturn with a midwinter festival that began on December 17 and later stretched over several days. Feasts, games, relaxed social rules and gifts such as wax candles and small figurines were part of it.

✂️
45 BCE

Julius Caesar adds two days

Under the older Roman calendar December had 29 days. Caesar’s reform, which created the 365-day Julian year, raised it to 31, the length it has kept ever since.

📜
354 CE

December 25 appears in a Roman almanac

An illustrated Roman almanac compiled in 354, known as the Chronograph of 354, lists December 25 as the day of Christ’s birth. It is one of the earliest written records of the date.

🇷🇺
December 1699

Russia moves New Year to January

By a decree issued in December 1699, Peter the Great ordered that the Russian year begin on January 1 instead of September 1, starting with 1700. Russia kept the Julian calendar until 1918.

How Other Calendars Meet the Year’s End

The Gregorian year that ends on December 31 is one of several systems in daily use. These six each have something to say about the same stretch of weeks.

🌐

Gregorian Calendar

Solar · 365/366 days

The civil calendar used for business, school and travel worldwide. It closes on December 31, which in 2027 is a Friday and day 365 of a common year.

🏛️

Julian (Old Style) Calendar

Solar · 365.25 days on average

Today it runs 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar, so December 25 on the Julian calendar arrives on January 7. Some Orthodox churches still date Christmas this way.

🕎

Hebrew Calendar

Lunisolar · 353–385 days

Hanukkah begins on the 25th of Kislev. Because Hebrew days start at sunset, the 2027 festival opens at sundown on December 24 and ends at nightfall on January 1, 2028.

🌙

Islamic (Hijri) Calendar

Lunar · 354/355 days

Months follow the crescent moon and do not track the seasons. Much of December 2027 falls in Rajab, the seventh month, and a given day’s Hijri date can differ by one between countries.

🏮

Chinese Calendar

Lunisolar · 353–385 days

The winter solstice, Dongzhi, is a festival in its own right and also anchors the calendar, since it must fall in the eleventh month. In 2027 it lands on December 22 in China.

🔥

Persian (Solar Hijri) Calendar

Solar · 365/366 days

Yalda Night marks the longest night of the year with poetry, pomegranates and watermelon. In 2027 it is celebrated on the evening of December 21, just before the first day of Dey.

Where December 31 Lands in a Common and a Leap Year

December always has 31 days, but its last day is not always day 365. In 2027 it is; in the leap year that follows, it is day 366.

📅 Common Year (2027)

365 days

February stays at 28 days, so Friday, December 31, 2027 is the 365th day. January 1, 2028 then starts on a Saturday.

vs

🐸 Leap Year (2028)

366 days

February 29, 2028 (a Tuesday) pushes everything after it one day later, so Sunday, December 31, 2028 is day 366. December itself is unchanged.

The three-part leap-year test

1Divisible by 4? → Candidate (e.g. 2024, 2028)
2Divisible by 100 as well? → Not a leap year (e.g. 1900, 2100)
3Divisible by 400 too? → Leap year again (e.g. 1600, 2000)

Averaged over 400 years this gives 365.2425 days per year, within about 26 seconds of the true tropical year. Adding a leap day every fourth year with no exceptions would run roughly three days ahead every four centuries.

A Clean, Crisp December Printout

December pages carry more labels than most months, so paper and scaling choices matter.

🖨️ Five steps to a good print

  1. Set paper size and orientation in the builder before you export.
  2. Save the PDF and open it in your browser or a PDF reader.
  3. Open the print dialog with Ctrl + P (Windows) or ⌘ + P (Mac).
  4. Choose Fit to page and keep the orientation you designed for.
  5. Check the preview once more; avoid Actual size if you changed paper after exporting.

💡 December-specific tips

  • Pick landscape when holiday names are on; entries such as “Boxing Day (substitute day)” need the width.
  • Print on A3 for a family wall planner with space for gift and party notes.
  • Save ink with a lighter accent and weekend shading off, or use Blank Calendar.
  • Use 120–160 gsm paper if the page will hang all month.

Who Prints a December Calendar?

December Trivia Worth Knowing

Nine short facts, checked against the 2027 calendar and astronomical data.

01

December comes from the Latin decem, “ten”. It was the tenth month when the Roman year began in March, and it kept the name after two months were added in front.

02

December 2027 has five Wednesdays, five Thursdays and five Fridays, and only four of every other weekday.

03

The December solstice arrives on December 22 at 02:41 UTC, the shortest day in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest in the Southern. In the Americas it is still December 21.

04

At mid-northern latitudes the earliest sunsets of the year come in the first half of December, about two weeks before the solstice; the latest sunrises follow in early January.

05

Turquoise, tanzanite and zircon are the birthstones most often listed for December, and the narcissus and holly are its birth flowers.

06

Advent 2027 begins on Sunday, November 28 and ends on Christmas Eve, so a 24-window Advent calendar starts on Wednesday, December 1.

07

Christmas Day falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday, so the UK, New Zealand, St Helena and most of Australia move the days off to Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28.

08

December 31, 2027 is a Friday and the 365th day of the year. It sits in ISO week 52, which ends on Sunday, January 2, 2028.

09

In tropical astrology the Sun is in Sagittarius until about December 21 and in Capricorn from about December 22. The switch moves by a day from year to year.

December & Year-End Myths, Sorted Out

A few popular claims about the month do not hold up.

Myth

December 25 is the birthday of Jesus, as recorded in the Bible.

Reality

The Gospels give no date. December 25 shows up in a Roman almanac from 354, and churches that follow the Julian calendar keep the same day, which is January 7 on the Gregorian calendar.

Myth

The shortest day also has the earliest sunset and the latest sunrise.

Reality

The dates differ because the Sun’s apparent motion is uneven. At mid-northern latitudes the earliest sunset comes in early December and the latest sunrise in early January, with the solstice between them.

Myth

December is the coldest month everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere.

Reality

Land and oceans keep losing stored heat after the solstice, so the lowest average temperatures usually arrive in January or February.

Myth

Christmas Day is a day off in every country.

Reality

It is an ordinary working day in Japan, mainland China and Saudi Arabia, for example. Even where it is a holiday, rules for weekend dates differ.

Myth

Every financial year ends on December 31.

Reality

The calendar year does, but tax and fiscal years vary: India’s runs to March 31, the UK personal tax year ends on April 5 and Australia’s ends on June 30.

Myth

A holiday that lands on a weekend always moves to a weekday.

Reality

Not always. The UK adds substitute bank holidays and US federal staff get the Friday before a Saturday holiday, but India’s central government generally leaves a weekend holiday where it falls.

December Feels Different Depending on Where You Stand

The seasons flip between hemispheres, so the same month means deep winter in one place and high summer in another.

❄️

Winter

Northern Hemisphere

Meteorological winter starts on December 1. Days shrink to their shortest around the solstice, and snow covers much of North America, northern Europe and northern Asia.

☀️

Summer

Southern Hemisphere

Australia, New Zealand, Chile and southern Africa reach their longest days. Christmas comes with school holidays, barbecues and beach weather.

🌧️

Wet and Dry Tropics

Near the Equator

Northern Australia, the Amazon basin and southern Africa are in a rainy season, while northern India and mainland Southeast Asia have cooler, drier weather. Southeastern India and Sri Lanka still get north-east monsoon showers.

🌌

Polar Extremes

Arctic and Antarctic

North of the Arctic Circle the Sun stays below the horizon around the solstice, giving polar night. In Antarctica it is the height of the 24-hour summer daylight.

What day does December 2027 start on?+
December 1, 2027 is a Wednesday and the month ends on Friday, December 31. Christmas Day falls on Saturday, December 25, and New Year's Eve on a Friday, so the 2027 holiday season lines up almost perfectly with a weekend.
Which file formats can I download?+
PDF, PNG or JPG. Each file is one December 2027 page sized for the paper you pick (A4, US Letter or A3), in landscape or portrait.
Where can I get a printable blank December 2027 calendar?+
Use the builder at the top and switch on Blank Calendar. Holidays, holiday names, moon phases, week numbers, weekend shading and notes lines all turn off, leaving a clean December grid. Any single option can be switched back on afterwards.
Which countries' public holidays are included?+
The United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, St Helena, New Zealand and India. Pick one in the Customise panel and only its dates are highlighted.
Which December 2027 dates are public holidays?+
Christmas Day (Saturday, December 25) is a holiday in nearly all ten countries, and Boxing Day or St Stephen's Day follows on Sunday, December 26 in nine of them (not India). Substitute days fall on Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28 in the UK, New Zealand, St Helena and most of Australia. The US federal government observes Friday, December 24 for Christmas and Friday, December 31 for New Year's Day. The Philippines has Dec 8, 24, 25, 30 and 31, and the UAE expects National Day on Dec 2 and 3. Local rules differ, so confirm with your employer or school.
Christmas 2027 is on a Saturday. Will I get a weekday off?+
It depends on where you are. The UK, New Zealand and St Helena move the days off to Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28, and most Australian states do the same. US federal offices close on Friday, December 24. In Canada and Ireland the answer depends on province, contract and employer, and India's central government keeps Saturday, December 25 as it is.
When are the moon phases in December 2027?+
The full moon is on December 13 (16:08 UTC) and the new moon on December 27 (20:12 UTC). In India the new moon falls at about 1:42 am on December 28. Turn on Moon Phases to mark both days on the calendar.

Yes. Use the Week starts on switch and the grid redraws in the preview and in your download. Monday is the default because it matches the ISO week standard. December 2027 fits in five rows either way.
Which ISO week numbers does December 2027 cover?+
Weeks 48 to 52. December 1 to 5 sit in week 48, which began on Monday, November 29. Week 52 runs from Monday, December 27 to Sunday, January 2, 2028, so December 27 to 31 all belong to week 52 of 2027.
Is 2027 a leap year, and what does that mean for December?+
2027 is a common year of 365 days, so Friday, December 31 is day 365. The next leap year is 2028, when December 31 becomes day 366. December itself always has 31 days.
What is the difference between public holidays and observances?+
Public (bank) holidays are official days off. Observances such as Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Armed Forces Flag Day are widely marked but do not close workplaces. You can show, hide and recolour each type separately.
Can I use any colour, not just the presets?+
