How July Got Its Name
From a numbered month to a tribute to Caesar: the short story of the month you are printing.
Quintilis, the fifth month
Rome's early year opened in March, which made this month the fifth. Its name, Quintilis, came from the Latin word for fifth.
New Year moves, the name stays
When Roman officials began their terms on January 1, Quintilis slid to seventh place. The old numbered name lingered for over a century.
Julius Caesar's calendar
The Julian reform set the month at 31 days and lined the calendar up with the sun, giving July the length it still has.
Renamed Iulius
After Caesar's assassination, the month of his birth was renamed Iulius in his honour, and August later followed the same pattern for Augustus.
Gregory leaves July alone
The Gregorian reform cut ten days out of October in the countries that adopted it. July kept its 31 days, and English carried the name forward as July.
How Other Calendars See July 2027
Other calendars slice the same weeks differently. Here is where July 2027 lands in six of them.
Gregorian Calendar
Solar ยท 365/366 days
The system behind this page. July 2027 is month seven, sitting between two 31-day neighbours, and it covers the start of the calendar's second half.
Islamic (Hijri) Calendar
Lunar ยท 354/355 days
July 2027 falls around the turn from Muharram to Safar 1449 AH. Because months follow the moon, exact days depend on local moon sighting.
Hebrew Calendar
Lunisolar ยท 353โ385 days
Summer months Tammuz and Av fill much of July and August, well ahead of Rosh Hashanah in the autumn.
Chinese Calendar
Lunisolar ยท 353โ385 days
2027 is the Year of the Goat, which began on February 6. July sits in the middle of that lunar year, a season known for the Qixi and Ghost festivals a little later.
Hindu Calendar
Lunisolar ยท varies by system
The month of Ashadha ends with Guru Purnima on July 18, and Shravana, a month of fasting and devotion, follows.
Ethiopian Calendar
Solar ยท 365/366 days
Its year 2019 is under way, and July 2027 mostly falls in the month of Hamle, part of the rainy season, about seven years behind the Gregorian count.
Does a Leap Year Touch July?
Never in length. July has 31 days every year, and it is one half of the only pair of back-to-back 31-day months, July and August. What a leap day changes is its position: July 1 is day 182 in 2027.
๐ Common Year (2027)
February has 28 days, so July 1 is day 182 and July 2 is the middle of the year. July 1 falls on a Thursday.
๐ธ Leap Year (2028)
With February 29 added, July 1, 2028 becomes day 183 and lands on a Saturday. The month itself is unchanged.
Testing a year in three questions
Together these rules average 365.2425 days per year, very close to the 365.2422 days Earth needs to circle the sun. Without them the seasons would slowly slip against the dates.
Getting a Sharp July Printout
A few settings decide whether the page prints crisp or cropped.
๐จ๏ธ Five steps to print
- Set the paper first (A4, Letter or A3) in the builder so the page is drawn for it.
- Save the PDF and open it in a browser or PDF reader.
- Open the print dialog with Ctrl + P on Windows or โ + P on a Mac.
- Choose Fit to page and match the orientation you selected.
- Check the preview before sending; avoid Actual size if you changed paper after exporting.
๐ก Extra pointers
- Wall use: print on A3 so the July grid stays crisp from across the room.
- Save ink: pick a lighter accent, turn off weekend shading, or tick Blank Calendar.
- Card stock: 120โ160 gsm paper holds up if the page will hang all month.
- Formats: PNG suits screens and wallpapers, PDF is safest for printers.
- Sharing: a one-page export means each person prints only July.
