How March Slipped From First Month to Third
March once opened the year. Its name, its length and its place in the calendar all trace back to Rome, with a few surprising echoes that reach the present day.
Martius leads the earliest Roman year
In the calendar tradition attached to Romulus, the year had ten months and began with Martius. New Year fell on the first of March, and the leftover winter days were simply not counted. The names September to December still carry their old numbers: seventh to tenth.
A month for Mars, war and the growing season
The name honours Mars, who was a god of war but also of fields and herds. March marked the return of both campaigning and farming after winter, and priests known as the Salii spent part of the month dancing through Rome with sacred shields in his honour.
Two new months push March down the list
Tradition credits King Numa Pompilius with adding January and February, which turned March into the third month on paper. Even so, the working year kept starting on March 1 for centuries, so the change of numbering took a long time to matter in daily life.
Officials take office in January instead
When the Senate moved the start of the consuls’ term to January 1, March lost its role as the opening of the civil year. The month kept its 31 days, and the later Julian reform of 45 BCE left that length unchanged.
The Ides of March enters history
Barely a year after the Julian calendar took effect, Julius Caesar was assassinated on the Ides of March. The Romans reckoned dates from three fixed points in each month, and in March the Ides fell on the 15th, which is why that date became a byword for foreboding.
Britain finally moves its New Year off March 25
England and its colonies counted the legal year from Lady Day, March 25, until the 1752 calendar reform, which also dropped eleven days. The echo survives in the UK tax year, which still begins on April 6, the old March 25 shifted by those eleven days plus a further day lost in 1800.
Calendars That Start the Year Around March
This page follows the Gregorian calendar, where March is simply the third month. Several other systems put their new year, or a major festival, at the same point in the spring.
Gregorian Calendar
Solar · 365/366 days
March is month three and always has 31 days. It inherits whatever weekday February ends on, which is why March 2027 opens on a Monday straight after a Sunday, February 28. In a leap year the extra February day pushes March 1 one weekday later.
Early Roman Calendar
Traditional · 10 months, 304 days
The oldest Roman year is remembered as starting on March 1, with its first day known as the Kalends of Martius. It is the reason the Latin numerals inside September, October, November and December no longer match those months’ positions.
Persian (Solar Hijri) Calendar
Solar · 365/366 days
The year opens with Nowruz, tied to the March equinox. If the equinox arrives before noon in Tehran, that day is the first of Farvardin; if it arrives later, the year starts the next day. In 2027 the equinox lands at 23:55 Tehran time on March 20, so Nowruz is observed on March 21.
Indian National (Saka) Calendar
Solar · 365/366 days
Adopted as India’s official civil calendar on March 22, 1957, it begins each year with Chaitra 1 on March 22, or March 21 in a Gregorian leap year. Saka year 1949 starts on March 22, 2027, and the government uses it alongside the Gregorian dates.
Islamic (Hijri) Calendar
Lunar · 354/355 days
Ramadan, the ninth month, closes in the second week of March in 2027, with Eid al-Fitr on 1 Shawwal expected around March 10. Because the lunar year is about eleven days shorter than the solar one, that is roughly ten days earlier than in 2026.
Julian Calendar & Old Style Dates
Solar · 365.25 days
The Julian calendar now runs 13 days behind the Gregorian one, so Orthodox churches that use it for Easter celebrate on May 2, 2027, five weeks after Western Easter on March 28. Until 1752, England also treated March 25 as the first day of its legal year.
Does a Leap Year Change March?
March never changes length, but it sits right after February, so a leap day does shift its weekdays and its day-of-year numbers. 2027 is a common year.
📅 Common Year (2027)
February has 28 days, so March 1 is day 60 of the year and March 31 is day 90. In 2027 that puts March 1 on a Monday, and February, March and November all open on a Monday.
🐸 Leap Year (2028)
February reaches 29 days, so March 1 becomes day 61 and March 31 day 91. Both months still have their usual lengths, but March 1, 2028 falls on a Wednesday instead of a Tuesday.
Finding the weekday of March 1
This is why February and March begin on the same weekday in every common year. A year counts as a leap year when it divides by 4, except century years that do not divide by 400, so 2028 and 2032 qualify, while 2100 does not. Because the extra day always lands in February, none of that ever alters how many days March has.
A Sharp, Well-Fitted March Printout
A few settings decide whether your March page comes out crisp and centred or cropped and fuzzy.
🖨️ Print in five steps
- Pick the paper first. Set A4, Letter or A3 in the builder before exporting, so the grid is drawn for that page size.
- Save the PDF and open it in your browser or a PDF reader.
- Open the print dialog with Ctrl + P on Windows or ⌘ + P on a Mac.
- Choose Fit to page (also called fit to printable area) and match the orientation you designed.
- Look over the print preview once more; avoid Actual size if you changed paper after exporting.
💡 Handy extras
- For a wall or noticeboard, choose A3; the March grid stays sharp when enlarged.
- To save ink, pick a lighter accent and turn off weekend shading, or use Blank Calendar for a plain grid.
- Use 120–160 gsm paper if the page will stay up all month.
- PNG works well as a phone or desktop wallpaper, while PDF is the safer choice for printers.
- Printing for a class or team? One page per person keeps everyone from wasting paper.

March Trivia Worth Knowing
Nine short facts about the month, checked against the calendar and the history books.
March is named after Mars, the Roman god of war, who was also honoured as a protector of crops and herds. That double role suited the month when campaigning and planting both restarted.
In the earliest Roman calendar, March was the first month and its first day was New Year’s Day. The month names September to December, from the Latin for seven to ten, still remember that.
March 2027 opens on a Monday and closes on a Wednesday, so Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each appear five times, while the other four weekdays appear four times.
The Ides of March fall on the 15th, a Monday in 2027. Only March, May, July and October had their Ides on the 15th; in the other eight months they landed on the 13th.
March’s birthstones are aquamarine and bloodstone, and its birth flower is the daffodil, which blooms as winter loosens its hold across much of the Northern Hemisphere.
Easter lands in March in 2027, on the 28th, for the first time since 2024. Its earliest possible date is March 22 and its latest is April 25.
March 2027 sits inside ISO weeks 9 to 13. Week 13 starts on Monday, March 29 and finishes on Sunday, April 4, so the month’s last three days share a week with the first four of April.
The March equinox arrives on March 20 at 20:25 UTC. That is still the 20th in London and Toronto, but already the 21st in Mumbai, Dubai, Manila and Sydney.
In the tropical zodiac the Sun moves from Pisces into Aries at the equinox, so the sign changes around March 20 or 21 depending on the time zone.
March & Calendar Myths, Sorted Out
Several popular claims about March and the calendar turn out to be only half true.
The Ides of March is the 15th of every month.
Only in March, May, July and October. In the other eight months the Ides were the 13th, because the Romans counted from three fixed points in each month: the Kalends, the Nones and the Ides.
Spring always begins on March 21.
The equinox falls on March 19, 20 or 21 depending on the year and the time zone. In 2027 it happens at 20:25 UTC on March 20, which is already March 21 across most of Asia and Australasia.
Easter always falls in April.
It can land anywhere from March 22 to April 25. In 2027 it is on March 28, the Sunday after the first full moon on or after the church’s fixed March 21 equinox date.
Every country changes its clocks on the same day.
North America moves on the second Sunday of March (March 14 in 2027) and Europe on the last Sunday (March 28), while Australia and New Zealand turn clocks back in April. India, the UAE and the Philippines do not change them at all.
March has always been the third month.
In the earliest Roman calendar it was the first. The civil year moved to January in 153 BCE, and England kept March 25 as the legal start of the year until 1752.
A leap year changes how long March lasts.
Only February gains a day. March keeps its 31 days, although the leap day does move every later date one weekday further along than it would go in an ordinary year.
One Month, Four Seasonal Stories
March straddles the equinox, so it feels like the start of spring in one hemisphere and the start of autumn in the other. Here is how it plays out depending on where you live.
Spring

Heat Building
South Asia & the GulfAcross much of India and the Gulf, temperatures climb quickly as the cooler months end. Festivals such as Holi are tied to the change of season and the late-winter crop harvest.

Eid al-Fitr
The festival that ends Ramadan is expected on Wednesday, March 10, subject to the crescent moon sighting. The UAE’s break is expected to run around March 9–12, and the Philippines will announce its holiday by separate proclamation.
