How October Got Its Name and Its Length

Its numbering, its name and even a stretch of missing days all trace back to Rome and to a papal fix. Here is the path that shaped the month you are printing above.

๐ŸŒฑ
8th century BCE

October is the eighth month of ten

In the calendar tradition attributed to Romulus, the year opened in March and ran for ten months. Counting from March, this month came eighth, and the Romans named it October from octo, the Latin word for eight.

๐Ÿ“ฏ
c. 713 BCE

Two new months push October to tenth place

Numa Pompilius, Rome's legendary second king, is credited with adding January and February. October now sat tenth in the sequence, yet its name stayed put, a numbering leftover that survives in English today.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ
45 BCE

Caesar keeps October at 31 days

Julius Caesar's reform introduced the Julian calendar with its 365-day year and leap day. October already had 31 days in the older Roman scheme, and the reform left that length unchanged.

๐Ÿ‘‘
c. 84โ€“96 CE

An emperor tries to rename the month

Domitian gave his own name to October, calling it Domitianus, but the change did not outlast him. After his reign the traditional name returned and stayed.

โ›ช
October 1582

Ten days vanish from the calendar

Pope Gregory XIII's reform removed ten days to realign the calendar with the seasons. In countries that adopted it at once, Thursday, October 4 was followed directly by Friday, October 15, so there was no October 5 to 14 that year.

How Other Calendars Line Up With October

The Gregorian calendar behind this page counts October as month ten. Other calendars in daily use start their years, and time their festivals, on very different dates.

๐ŸŒ

Gregorian Calendar

Solar ยท 365/366 days

The system behind the October page above: twelve months of 28 to 31 days with a leap day about every fourth year. Under it October is always the tenth month and always 31 days long.

๐ŸŒ™

Islamic (Hijri) Calendar

Lunar ยท 354/355 days

A purely lunar year that runs roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian one. Its months therefore drift backwards through the seasons, and its new year, Muharram, falls in early June in 2027 rather than in October.

โœก๏ธ

Hebrew Calendar

Lunisolar ยท 353โ€“385 days

The Hebrew new year begins in the autumn month of Tishrei. Rosh Hashanah 2027 starts at sundown on Friday, October 1, and Yom Kippur follows on October 11, so this calendar's year turns during our October.

๐Ÿฎ

Chinese Calendar

Lunisolar ยท 353โ€“385 days

Each month begins on a new moon and leap months keep the year aligned with the seasons. In 2027 the new moon on October 29 opens a month, while the Lunar New Year itself is in early February.

๐Ÿ•‰๏ธ

Hindu Calendar

Lunisolar ยท varies by system

Regional systems mix lunar months with solar corrections, so festivals hop around the Gregorian calendar. Diwali, tied to the new moon of the month of Kartika, lands on October 29 in 2027.

โœ๏ธ

Ethiopian Calendar

Solar ยท 365/366 days

Twelve 30-day months plus a short thirteenth month. Its new year, Enkutatash, falls in September, so in October 2027 the Ethiopian calendar is only a few weeks into its year, which numbers about seven to eight less than ours.

Does October Ever Gain or Lose a Day?

2027 is a common year, and it would not matter either way: October is one of seven months fixed at 31 days whatever the year type. Only February ever changes length, so the extra day never reaches October.

๐Ÿ“… Common Year (2027)

365 days

February stays at 28 days, and October runs its usual 31 days from Friday, October 1 to Sunday, October 31. Most years, 2027 included, are common years, each falling about a quarter of a day short of one full orbit.

vs

๐Ÿธ Leap Year

366 days

February gains a 29th day while October stays exactly 31 days. That one extra day, added only to February, brings the calendar back in step with Earth's orbit of roughly 365.2422 days.

How to tell if a year qualifies

1Divisible by 4? โ†’ Leap year, provisionally (e.g. 2024, 2028)
2Also divisible by 100? โ†’ Cancel that, it's not a leap year (e.g. 1900, 2100)
3Also divisible by 400? โ†’ It is a leap year after all (e.g. 1600, 2000)

Nicknamed the "4-100-400" rule, this keeps the long-run average year length at 365.2425 days โ€” off from Earth's real orbit by less than half a minute. Skip the 100/400 exceptions and a plain every-fourth-year rule would overshoot by roughly three days every four centuries, gradually pulling the seasons out of place on the calendar.

Getting a Clean October Printout

A few settings separate a crisp, wall-ready October page from one that prints cropped or fuzzy.

๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ Print in five steps

  1. Pick your paper size in the builder (A4, Letter or A3) before exporting, so the page is drawn for that size from the start.
  2. Save the PDF and open it in your browser or a PDF reader.
  3. Press Ctrl + P on Windows or โŒ˜ + P on a Mac to open the print dialog.
  4. Set scaling to Fit to page (or "fit to printable area") and match the orientation you designed in.
  5. Check the preview before you print, and avoid Actual size if you changed paper after exporting.

๐Ÿ’ก More pointers

  • Printing a poster for a classroom or office? Choose A3; the October grid stays sharp when scaled up.
  • Save ink with a lighter accent and weekend shading off, or tick Blank Calendar for the leanest page.
  • Use 120โ€“160 gsm paper if the page will hang on a wall all month and face fridge-door traffic.
  • PNG works well as a phone or desktop background; PDF is the safer file for a printer.
  • Sharing with a group? A one-page October file means each person prints only what they need.

October Trivia Worth Knowing

Nine short facts about the month, checked against the calendar and the history books.

01

October gets its name from octo, Latin for eight. It was the eighth month when the Roman year began in March, and it kept the name after two months were added in front of it.

02

October is one of seven months that always have 31 days, together with January, March, May, July, August and December. Leap years never touch it.

03

October 1, 2027 is a Friday, so the month opens with a weekend of its own on October 2 and 3, and in parts of Australia it stretches to Monday, October 4.

04

October 2027 has five Fridays, five Saturdays and five Sundays, and just four of every other weekday.

05

In 1582 the switch to the Gregorian calendar deleted October 5 to 14 in the countries that adopted it first, so that month was only 21 days long there.

06

The traditional birthstones for October are opal and tourmaline, and the birth flowers are the marigold and the cosmos.

07

October 2027 spans ISO weeks 39 to 43. Friday, October 1 is the tail end of week 39, and week 40 starts on Monday, October 4.

08

Libra covers October 1 to around the 22nd, after which Scorpio begins. The switch date can move by a day from year to year.

09

October 2027 has two lunar milestones: a full moon on October 15 and a new moon on October 29, the same night as Diwali in India.

October & Calendar Myths, Sorted Out

Some frequently repeated claims about the month do not survive a closer look.

Myth

October has always been the tenth month.

Reality

Only since Rome added January and February. In the original ten-month year that began in March, October was the eighth month, which is why its name still means eight.

Myth

October is the same season everywhere.

Reality

It depends on the hemisphere. October is autumn in the north, spring in the south, and in the tropics it often brings the end of the rainy season.

Myth

Every year of the Gregorian calendar has an October 5 to 14.

Reality

Not in 1582. Countries that switched to the Gregorian calendar that October went straight from the 4th to the 15th, so those ten dates never happened there.

Myth

Diwali and Dussehra fall on the same Gregorian date every year.

Reality

Both follow the lunisolar Hindu calendar, so their Gregorian dates move. In 2027 Dussehra is on October 9 and Diwali on October 29, while other years place them in different weeks or even in November.

Myth

Clocks change on the same weekend everywhere.

Reality

They do not. Australia's daylight saving starts in early October, Europe's ends on the last Sunday of October, and the US and Canada wait until early November.

Myth

Oktoberfest is held in October.

Reality

It mostly happens in September. The 2027 edition runs from September 18 and finishes on October 3, so only the last three days fall in October.

One Month, Four Very Different Seasons

Because the seasons flip between hemispheres, October is falling leaves in one place and blossom in another. Here is what the month looks like depending on where you are.

๐Ÿ‚

Autumn

Northern Hemisphere

October is peak autumn across the US, Canada, the UK and Europe. Leaves turn, nights lengthen, harvest festivals fill the calendar and the first frosts arrive in colder regions.

๐ŸŒธ

Spring

Southern Hemisphere

South of the equator the season flips. Australia, New Zealand, Chile and South Africa see days lengthen and gardens bloom, and school terms head towards their final stretch.

๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ

Post-Monsoon

South & Southeast Asia

Across much of India the monsoon retreats in October, leaving clearer skies and milder days that suit the run of festivals from Dussehra to Diwali.

๐ŸŒต

Cooling Down

Hot Deserts & Gulf Regions

In the UAE and other desert areas the fierce heat finally eases in October. Evenings turn pleasant, and outdoor events and markets return after the summer lull.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about the October 2027 calendar: dates, holidays, moon phases, printing and the builder itself.

Is this October 2027 calendar free to use?+
Yes. Every setting and every download option is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The calendar is drawn locally in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
What day does October 2027 start on?+
October 1, 2027 is a Friday and the month ends on Sunday, October 31, 2027. With a Monday start the grid needs five rows; with a Sunday start it needs six, because the first lands late in the week.
What file formats can I download?+
PDF, PNG or JPG. Each download is a single October 2027 page sized to the paper you choose (A4, US Letter or A3) in landscape or portrait.
Where can I get a printable blank calendar for October 2027?+
Use the builder at the top of this page and tick Blank Calendar. That switches off holidays, holiday names, moon phases, week numbers, weekend highlighting and notes lines, leaving a clean October 2027 grid to download as a PDF, PNG or JPG. Any option can be switched back on.
Which countries' public holidays are included?+
The United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, St Helena, New Zealand and India. In October 2027 that covers Columbus Day (US) and Thanksgiving (Canada) on October 11, Labour Day or the King's Birthday on October 4 (parts of Australia), the October Bank Holiday and Labour Day on October 25 (Ireland, New Zealand), and Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra and Diwali in India.
Which October 2027 dates are the public holidays?+
Monday, October 4 is Labour Day in NSW, the ACT and South Australia, and the King's Birthday in Queensland. Monday, October 11 is Columbus Day in the US and Thanksgiving in Canada. Monday, October 25 is the October Bank Holiday in Ireland and Labour Day in New Zealand. In India, Gandhi Jayanti is Saturday, October 2, Dussehra is Saturday, October 9 and Diwali is Friday, October 29. The UK, the Philippines, the UAE and St Helena have no public holiday in October. Local and regional days differ, so confirm with your employer or school.
When are the moon phases in October 2027?+
The full moon falls on October 15 and the new moon on October 29, 2027 (dates in UTC; the exact hour varies by time zone). Turn on the moon-phase option to mark both on the calendar.
Which October 2027 weekends are long weekends?+
In New South Wales, the ACT, South Australia and Queensland, October 2 to 4 is a three-day weekend. In the US and Canada, October 9 to 11 is one, and in Ireland and New Zealand so is October 23 to 25. The UK has no October bank holiday, so its weekends stay two days long.
Can the week start on Sunday instead of Monday?+
Yes. Use the Week starts on switch and the grid redraws straight away, both in the preview and in your download. Monday is the default because it matches the ISO week standard.
What are ISO week numbers and how do they work in October 2027?+
ISO weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday. In October 2027, Friday October 1 is still in week 39, week 40 begins on Monday, October 4, and Sunday, October 31 closes week 43.
Is 2027 a leap year, and does it change October?+
2027 is not a leap year, and it would make no difference to October either way. October always has 31 days; only February gains an extra day in leap years.
What is the difference between public holidays and observances?+
Public (bank) holidays are official days off recognised nationally or regionally. Observances, such as Halloween, are widely marked but are not a mandated day off. The calendar lets you show, hide and recolour each type separately.
Can I use any colour, not just the presets?+
Yes. Pick one of the 14 ready-made accent themes or open the colour picker and choose any colour; the header, weekend shading and highlights update to match.
How do I get the cleanest printout?+
Choose your paper size before downloading, save the PDF, and in the print dialog set scaling to Fit to page with the same orientation you picked. For a wall calendar, A3 keeps the grid sharp.
Does it work on a phone?+
Yes. The builder is responsive and downloads work in current mobile browsers. For the best printout, save the PDF and print it from a computer or your printer's own app.
Why is October the tenth month if its name means eight?+
The name comes from the Latin octo, meaning eight. In the oldest Roman calendar the year began in March, which made October the eighth month. When January and February were added to the front of the year, October slid to tenth place but kept its name.
Is October autumn everywhere?+
No. October is autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia, New Zealand and southern Africa. Tropical regions follow wet and dry seasons instead, and in much of India it marks the end of the monsoon.
