How January Became the Start of the Year

January's length, its name and even its claim to being the first month all went through several rounds of revision. Here's the path that shaped the month you're printing above.

๐ŸŒฑ
8th century BCE

Rome's earliest calendar has no January at all

The calendar traditionally credited to Romulus ran only ten named months, opening the year in March and simply leaving the coldest stretch of winter uncounted. There was no January in this system โ€” the days we now assign to it weren't tracked as part of any month.

๐Ÿบ
Uncertain origin

Where the name Ianuarius actually comes from

Roman writers agreed the name honoured Janus, the two-faced god of doorways, gates and transitions, who was pictured looking simultaneously backward and forward. A month that opens the year and looks both at what came before and what's ahead fit the god's symbolism closely enough that few ancient sources disputed the connection.

๐Ÿ“ฏ
c. 713 BCE

Numa Pompilius adds January to the calendar

Legend credits Rome's second king with adding both January and February to the front of the Romulan calendar, finally giving every day of the year a home. Even so, January still opened in second place behind March for several more centuries, since the Roman civil and religious year kept starting in spring.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ
153 BCE

January 1 becomes the start of the Roman year

The Roman Senate moved the date newly elected consuls took office to January 1, largely for administrative convenience tied to military campaign timing. That single scheduling decision is what first fixed January as the calendar's opening month, a position it has held in the Western world ever since.

โ›ช
45 BCE onward

Caesar and Gregory both keep January at 31 days

Julius Caesar's 45 BCE reform fixed January's length at 31 days as part of the new Julian calendar, and Pope Gregory XIII's 1582 correction โ€” which trimmed ten days from the calendar and refined the leap-year rule โ€” never touched month lengths. January has run exactly 31 days through every reform since Caesar's time.

How Other Calendars Mark a New Year

The Gregorian calendar this January page follows fixes New Year's Day on January 1 every single year. Several other systems in active use start their year on a completely different date.

๐ŸŒ

Gregorian Calendar

Solar ยท 365/366 days

The system behind the January page above: twelve months running 28 to 31 days, with a leap day slotted in roughly every fourth year. It's the calendar most governments, schools and businesses run on globally, and January 1 always opens the year regardless of leap status.

๐ŸŒ™

Islamic (Hijri) Calendar

Lunar ยท 354/355 days

A strictly lunar system of 12 months with no correction for the solar year at all. Since it's about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year, its new year, Muharram, drifts steadily earlier through the Gregorian calendar rather than ever settling on a fixed January date.

โœก๏ธ

Hebrew Calendar

Lunisolar ยท 353โ€“385 days

Its months track the moon, but a leap month gets inserted in 7 out of every 19 years to keep festivals in the right season. Rosh Hashanah, the Hebrew new year, is tied to autumn rather than January, landing in the Gregorian September or October instead.

๐Ÿฎ

Chinese Calendar

Lunisolar ยท 353โ€“385 days

Each month opens on a new moon, while solar markers keep the broader year aligned with the seasons. Chinese New Year is set by this lunisolar rule and falls on a different date each year, sometimes in late January and sometimes in February.

๐Ÿ•‰๏ธ

Hindu Calendar

Lunisolar ยท varies by system

Several regional variants run side by side, most blending lunar months with solar corrections. Makar Sankranti, marking the sun's move into Capricorn, falls in mid-January on the Gregorian calendar and is one of the few Hindu festivals tied to a fixed solar date.

โœ๏ธ

Ethiopian Calendar

Solar ยท 365/366 days

Twelve months of exactly 30 days each, plus a short thirteenth month of five or six days. A different starting point for counting years leaves the Ethiopian calendar running roughly seven to eight years behind the Gregorian one we use for January 2027, with its own new year falling in the Gregorian September.

Does January Ever Gain or Lose a Day?

2027 is a common year, and it wouldn't matter either way โ€” January is one of seven months fixed at 31 days regardless of leap status. Only February ever changes length, so the ripple never reaches January.

๐Ÿ“… Common Year (2027)

365 days

February sits at 28 days and January holds its usual 31. Most years, 2027 included, are common years โ€” each one running about a quarter-day shorter than Earth's actual trip around the sun.

vs

๐Ÿธ Leap Year

366 days

February picks up a 29th day while January stays exactly 31 days long. That single extra day, added only to February, pulls the calendar back in line with Earth's orbit, which actually takes about 365.2422 days.

How to tell if a year qualifies

1Divisible by 4? โ†’ Leap year, provisionally (e.g. 2024, 2028)
2Also divisible by 100? โ†’ Cancel that, it's not a leap year (e.g. 1900, 2100)
3Also divisible by 400? โ†’ It is a leap year after all (e.g. 1600, 2000)

Nicknamed the "4-100-400" rule, this keeps the long-run average year length at 365.2425 days โ€” off from Earth's real orbit by less than half a minute. Skip the 100/400 exceptions and a plain every-fourth-year rule would overshoot by roughly three days every four centuries, gradually pulling the seasons out of place on the calendar.

Getting a Clean January Printout

A handful of settings separate a crisp, wall-ready January page from one that prints cropped or blurry.

๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ Print in five steps

  1. Lock in your paper size up in the builder (A4, Letter or A3) before you export, so the layout is drawn for it from the start.
  2. Grab the PDF and open it in your browser or a dedicated PDF reader.
  3. Hit Ctrl + P on Windows or โŒ˜ + P on a Mac to bring up the print dialog.
  4. Set scaling to Fit to page (or "fit to printable area") and make sure orientation matches your design.
  5. Glance at the print preview before sending it โ€” skip Actual size if your paper choice changed after exporting.

๐Ÿ’ก A few extra pointers

  • Printing for a wall? Bump up to A3 โ€” the January layout scales cleanly without getting blurry.
  • Cut down on ink use with a lighter accent colour and weekend highlighting switched off, or tick Blank Calendar for a printable blank calendar.
  • Reach for heavier stock (120โ€“160 gsm) if this January page is going up for the whole month.
  • PNG suits phone or desktop wallpapers; PDF is the safer bet for anything headed to a printer.
  • Handing this off to a group? A single-page January export means everyone prints just what they need.

January Trivia Worth Knowing

Nine short facts about the month, checked against the calendar and the history books.

01

January is named for Janus, the Roman god of doorways and transitions, traditionally shown with two faces โ€” one looking back at the year closing, the other forward at the year opening.

02

January wasn't always the first month. The earliest Roman calendar had no January at all, and even after it was added, the Roman year kept opening in March for centuries before January 1 was fixed as the start date.

03

January is one of seven months โ€” alongside March, May, July, August, October and December โ€” that always runs 31 days, a length untouched by leap years, which only ever add a day to February.

04

January 1, 2027 is a Friday, so wherever New Year’s Day is a day off, the year opens with a three-day weekend.

05

The January birthstone, garnet, is traditionally linked to protection and friendship, while the month's birth flowers โ€” the carnation and the snowdrop โ€” are both known for blooming even in cold winter conditions.

06

Rome began its official year on January 1 in 153 BCE, yet much of Europe later used other dates. England and its colonies started the legal year on March 25 until the 1752 calendar reform.

07

January 2027 straddles a year boundary in the ISO week system โ€” its first few days belong to week 53 of 2026 before week 1 of 2027 begins, a quirk unique to months at the turn of the year.

08

January 2027 contains exactly five Fridays, five Saturdays and five Sundays, and only four of every other weekday.

09

Capricorn covers the first days of January up to about the 19th and Aquarius begins around the 20th. The switch date moves by a day from year to year.

January & Calendar Myths, Sorted Out

Some frequently repeated calendar claims don't survive a closer look.

Myth

January 1 has always been New Year's Day everywhere, throughout history.

Reality

Not even close โ€” ancient Rome itself opened its civil year in March for centuries, and several European countries kept dates like March 25 as their legal new year well into the 1700s, long after January 1 had already been adopted elsewhere.

Myth

Every culture celebrates the new year in January.

Reality

Only calendars anchored to the Gregorian solar year do. The Islamic Hijri new year drifts through every Gregorian month over time, Chinese New Year falls in late January or February depending on the lunar cycle, and the Hebrew new year lands in autumn.

Myth

Every year divisible by 4 is a leap year.

Reality

Not quite โ€” century years also need to be divisible by 400. That's why 2000 qualified as a leap year while 1900 and 2100 don't; without that extra condition, the calendar would slowly drift from the seasons over the centuries.

Myth

New Year's resolutions are a modern marketing invention.

Reality

The tradition is genuinely ancient. Babylonian records describe new-year promises to the gods thousands of years ago, and Romans made similar pledges to Janus, whose forward-and-backward gaze made him a natural patron for resolutions.

Myth

A month can gain or lose days depending on the year, the way February does.

Reality

Only February's length ever changes. January, like March, May, July, August, October and December, is fixed at exactly 31 days in every single year under the Gregorian calendar, leap or not.

Myth

Winter festivals around the world all cluster on the same date because they're all tied to the same calendar.

Reality

They cluster around the same season, not the same date. Pongal, Makar Sankranti, Hogmanay and the Gregorian New Year are each set by different solar, lunisolar or purely civil rules, so their exact dates move independently even though they all sit around the turn of the year.

One Month, Four Very Different Seasons

Because the seasons flip between hemispheres, January means deep winter in one part of the world and peak summer in another. Here's what the month actually looks like depending on where you are.

โ„๏ธ

Winter

Northern Hemisphere

January sits at the heart of winter across the US, UK, Europe, India's north and most of Asia โ€” the coldest average temperatures of the year, shorter daylight hours, and snow across much of the mid and high latitudes.

โ˜€๏ธ

Summer

Southern Hemisphere

South of the equator, January is peak summer. Australia, New Zealand, southern Brazil, Argentina and South Africa see their longest days, warmest temperatures and main summer holiday season of the year.

๐ŸŒพ

Dry / Cool Season

Tropics & Near-Equator

Much of South and Southeast Asia, plus parts of Africa, run on a wet/dry cycle rather than four seasons โ€” January typically falls in a cooler, drier stretch, with harvest festivals like Pongal marking the season in southern India.

๐ŸŒค๏ธ

Early Spring Signs

Warmer Coastal Regions

In milder coastal and low-latitude parts of the Northern Hemisphere โ€” parts of the southern US, the Mediterranean and southern China โ€” late January can already bring the first hints of longer days and early blossoms, even while inland regions stay deep in winter.

January 2027 Festivals and Events

Six January events worth writing on your calendar, with the 2027 dates where they are fixed.

๐ŸŽ†๐ŸŽ†
Worldwide

New Year's Eve & Day

Fireworks, countdowns and gatherings ring in January 1 across nearly every time zone, from Sydney Harbour's midnight display to the Times Square ball drop, making it one of the most globally synchronised celebrations of the year.

๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŒพ
India

Pongal & Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti marks the sun’s entry into Capricorn. In 2027 that moment comes at 9:09 pm IST on January 14, so most Indian calendars observe Makar Sankranti and Thai Pongal on Friday, January 15. Lohri is celebrated the evening before, on January 13. Expect kites, bonfires and sesame or rice sweets.

๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฅ
Scotland

Hogmanay's Final Days

Scotland's multi-day New Year festival, Hogmanay, runs from December 31 into the first days of January, with torchlight processions and first-footing traditions that carry the celebration well past midnight.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒน
United States

Rose Parade & Rose Bowl

Every January 1 in Pasadena, California, elaborate flower-covered floats process down Colorado Boulevard ahead of the Rose Bowl football game, a tradition running since the 1890s.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about the January 2027 calendar: dates, holidays, moon phases, printing and the builder itself.

Is this January 2027 calendar free to use?+
Yes. Every setting and every download option is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The calendar is drawn locally in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
What day does January 2027 start on?+
January 1, 2027 is a Friday and the month ends on Sunday, January 31, 2027. That gives January 2027 four full Monday-to-Sunday weeks plus a short opening stretch of three days (Friday to Sunday).
What file formats can I download?+
PDF, PNG or JPG. Each download is a single January 2027 page sized to the paper you choose (A4, US Letter or A3) in landscape or portrait.
Where can I get a printable blank calendar for January 2027?+
Use the builder at the top of this page and tick Blank Calendar. That turns off holidays, holiday names, moon phases, week numbers, weekend highlighting and notes lines, leaving a clean January 2027 grid you can download as a PDF, PNG or JPG and print on A4, US Letter or A3. Any option can be switched back on if you want it.
Which countries' public holidays are included?+
The United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, St Helena, New Zealand and India. In January 2027 that includes New Year's Day in all ten, Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18 (US), Australia Day and Republic Day on January 26 (Australia and India), and regional days such as Wellington Anniversary Day on January 25 (New Zealand).
Which January 2027 dates are the public holidays?+
New Year's Day is Friday, January 1 in all ten countries. Monday, January 4 is a substitute day off in Scotland (2nd January) and in New Zealand (Day after New Year's Day). Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 18 in the US. Wellington Anniversary Day is Monday, January 25 in the Wellington region of New Zealand. Australia Day and India's Republic Day are both Tuesday, January 26. Canada, the Philippines, the UAE and St Helena have New Year's Day only in January. Local and regional holidays may differ, so confirm with your employer or school.
When are the moon phases in January 2027?+
The new moon falls on January 7 and the full moon on January 22, 2027 (dates in UTC; the exact hour varies by time zone). Turn on the moon-phase option to mark both on the calendar.
Can the week start on Sunday instead of Monday?+
Yes. Use the Week starts on switch and the grid redraws straight away, both in the preview and in your download. Monday is the default because it matches the ISO week standard.
What are ISO week numbers and how do they work in January 2027?+
ISO weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday. Because January 1, 2027 is a Friday, January 1 to 3 still belong to week 53 of 2026, and week 1 of 2027 begins on Monday, January 4.
Is 2027 a leap year, and does it change January?+
2027 is not a leap year, and it would make no difference to January either way. January always has 31 days; only February gains an extra day in leap years.
What is the difference between public holidays and observances?+
Public (bank) holidays are official days off recognised nationally. Observances, such as Valentine's Day, are widely marked but are not a mandated day off. The calendar lets you show, hide and recolour each type separately.
Can I use any colour, not just the presets?+
Yes. Pick one of the 14 ready-made accent themes or open the colour picker and choose any colour; the header, weekend shading and highlights update to match.
How do I get the cleanest printout?+
Choose your paper size before downloading, save the PDF, and in the print dialog set scaling to Fit to page with the same orientation you picked. For a wall calendar, A3 keeps the grid sharp.
Does it work on a phone?+
Yes. The builder is responsive and downloads work in current mobile browsers. For the best printout, save the PDF and print it from a computer or your printer's own app.
Where does the name January come from?+
